How this list is built

  1. Every word here comes from ENABLE, a lexicon released to the public domain — 172,823 words. It is the list this site can legally publish in full, and it is stated openly rather than implied.
  2. The tournament lists — TWL/OWL in North America, Collins/SOWPODS elsewhere — are copyrighted compilations. They are not used here and not merged in. A small number of words will therefore differ from what a given game accepts.
  3. Scores use the standard tile values (A=1 … Q=10, Z=10) and ignore board bonuses, which depend on where you place the word, not on the word itself.
  4. Lists are ordered by score, then alphabetically — the order that is useful when you are choosing a play, rather than alphabetical for its own sake.

Words you will notice are missing

ENABLE was compiled in 1997. The tournament lists have since added a run of very short, very useful words — QI, ZA, ZO, KI and others — and those additions are inside a copyrighted compilation, so a freely publishable lexicon cannot carry them.

If you searched for one of those and found nothing, that is why: not a bug, and not a claim that the word is invalid in your game. It is the honest edge of a public-domain list, and it is the trade for a site that can tell you exactly what it is built on.

Why results can differ from your game

This site publishes ENABLE, which is public domain. The lists used by the tournament scene — TWL/OWL in North America, Collins elsewhere — are copyrighted compilations that cannot be republished freely, so no free tool is genuinely using them however it is labelled. The overlap is very large, but a handful of words differ, and it is better that you know that than be told a word is "valid" with no idea by whose rule.
